Winifred Johnson has been chosen as the August Resident of the month at Montgomery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Winifred is the daughter of Charles Hand and Margaret (Stauder) Hand. Her Grandfather, William Hand was one of the earliest entrepreneurs and developers of Nokomis. She was married to Lawrence H. Johnson for 45 years and had three children, Margaret Ann Johnson (married Ralph Peifer), the late Lawrence (Sonny) Johnson (married Nancy Obregar) and Carroll Johnson (married JoAnn Satterfield), six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Lawrence and Winifred made their first home in South Audubon Township where they raised their children. In 1964 they moved to the South side of Nokomis, to the beautiful home her grandfather, William Hand, built for his family in 1904. The farm was called Black Diamond Farm for the Black Angus cattle they raised, and the coal Lawrence had once mined. In 1968 they lost their oldest son, Sonny, to a brain aneurysm. He left behind many joyful memories for all who knew him. Lawrence passed away in 1981, and Winifred continued the winter pilgrimage they had made yearly since the 1950’s to south Ft. Myers, Florida for the next 20 years. She attained her goal of making the trips to the age of 90, selling her condo in 2001. She has faced the frigid Illinois winters bravely ever since.

She is the last surviving charter member of the Thrifty Club, a group of ladies dedicated to making the best possible lives for their families. Winifred is well known for her green thumb and deep appreciation for all things floral! Her culinary skills have never failed to impress, and her flair for enhancing everything from gift wrap to garnishes always makes her work stand out. She truly puts a special touch on everything she does!
Winifred has an unflagging spirit and has kept her mind sharp over the years, always doing her own bookwork and playing cards at every opportunity-winning far more than losing, for sure! She has a keen sense of humor and brings joy to others every day. She always shows us how to walk the high road.

The staff at Montgomery Nursing & Rehabilitation Center participated in "Blue Jean Days" to help raise funds for the Cysitic Fibrosis Foundation.
The Heart Crew donated $2 and wore their favorite denim blues to work on several Fridays. Residents, Family Members and the gang at Karen's Bakery also opened their hearts and reached into their pockets to help make the fundraiser a success. Over $150 was collected to aid in medical research to help find a cure for the disease. Cysitic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects approximately 30,000 children and young adults in America today.
Montgomery Nursing & Rehab Center is honored to be a supporter of the Foundation and assist in their efforts to help fight the disease.
